Riding high at Sun Peaks
Sun Peaks offers skiers & snowboarders a choice of 13 lifts to ascend the peaks and carve through the snow-covered slopes including the newest West Bowl quad chairlift to start spinning for the 2024/25 season.
With so many chairlift options available, figuring out where to begin can be quite the challenge. So, to kick things off, and before we talk about the latest & ‘greatest,’ let’s delve into Sun Peaks’ first three chairlifts nestled in the valley, which will set you on your way to the slopes. Over the years these chairlifts have developed a personality all their own!
Burfield
“Back then it was just me up here, and a bunch of long-haired free thinkers. We were all about good times and big snow days.”
Sunburst
“I love my job! I get to be the centre of attention. Everyone comes to me when they need something, I’ve got access to every kind of terrain you could think of.”
Sundance
“I like to stay close to my roots and keep an eye on the next gen. Sometimes I like to give them a bump up the hill after school, too!”
West Bowl Express – New for 2024/25
And while we cherish the beloved classics, Sun Peaks is rolling out a brand new detachable quad chairlift: the West Bowl Express for the 2024/25 season. Located on Tod Mountain it used to be serviced by the trusty West Bowl T-bar for over 20 years until it was retired in 2021. Since then, getting there required a short hike. But with the new chairlift, you’ll glide right up to this beautiful, sunny, south-facing spot with epic alpine views.
It’s been three years in the making, and construction is in full swing. Everything is on track for its grand opening at the start of the 2024-25 season.
Get ready for some fantastic new trails and regular grooming in the West Bowl, turning it into a paradise for intermediate skiers. Think lots of cruisy blue runs perfect for those sunny, bluebird days. Pair this with the Crystal chairlift that opened in 2020, and you’ve got a recipe for endless alpine fun for skiers and riders of most abilities.
Behind the Scenes of the Big Build
The West Bowl Express is a $12 million project built by the experts at Doppelmayr. This will be Sun Peaks’ eighth chairlift, adding to the five surface lifts already in action. Major components have started arriving, and the Doppelmayr crew is on-site, getting ready to put it all together. Expect to see towers, crossarms, and sheave assemblies flying up the mountain in May – and we’ll updated the blog with updates as they happen.
Right now, Sun Peaks is carefully removing select trees over the snow, ensuring they don’t disturb the ground. The new lift is twice as long as the old T-bar, with new top and bottom terminals, and it’ll whisk you to the top in just six minutes. More trails and expanded terrain mean even more ways to explore and enjoy Sun Peaks. So, mark your calendars, book your ski holiday, and get ready for another unforgettable winter at Sun Peaks. The resort and the locals are looking forward to your visit.
