Today’s Insider Guide is written by Kevin Davis – Ski Travel Expert, who recently explored British Columbia and is sharing his firsthand experience with us.
My December ski trip to Canada was already shaping up to be an unforgettable adventure, but I wanted to add something extra, something that would take me beyond the ski slopes and into the heart of winter wilderness. That is how I found myself trading in my skis for two totally different, yet equally thrilling, experiences: dog sledding at Sun Peaks and snowmobiling in Whistler.
Dog Power: Sledding with the Best Furry Friends
While in Sun Peaks, I could not pass up the chance to go dog sledding with Mountain Man Adventure Tours. Chris and Taryn, the warm and welcoming couple who run the business, made the whole experience feel like an intimate, family-run adventure rather than a commercial tour.
Before we even set off, I got to meet the dogs, each one bursting with excitement and eager to run. They stay in their cozy “day stay” accommodations near the office hut, and I was lucky enough to cuddle a few and even meet some puppies in training. But the real magic happened once we got out on the trail.
The moment the dogs were harnessed and ready, the air was filled with barks and anticipation. But as soon as we took off, everything fell silent, except for the soft swish of the sled on the snow. It was incredible how effortlessly the team worked together, experienced dogs guiding the younger ones, powerful workhorses in the back, and the leaders setting the pace. It was peaceful, exhilarating, and completely surreal.
Gliding through the snow-covered trees with the dogs running in perfect harmony, I felt completely in sync with nature. It was an adventure, yes, but also a moment of pure tranquility, one I will not forget anytime soon.
Horsepower: Snowmobiles for the Win
For a completely different kind of thrill, I headed to Whistler for a snowmobile tour with Canadian Wilderness Adventures. Sacha and Brock, our expert guides, made sure we were prepped and ready before we hit the trails in the breathtaking Callaghan Valley.
After a quick rundown of the controls and a few practice runs, we were off, tearing through fresh powder and winding our way through the stunning alpine landscape. It did not take long to get comfortable with the throttle, and soon enough, I was confidently cruising up and down hills, pushing my limits with each turn.
The best part? Reaching a spectacular lookout point where we stopped to take in the view. Standing there, surrounded by untouched snow and towering peaks, I had one of those wow moments, just me, the mountains, and the crisp winter air. And on the way back, with my confidence up, I let loose and really opened up the throttle. By the end of the ride, I was hooked, I could have spent all day out there. If you ever try snowmobiling, trust me, go for the more advanced tour, because once you get the hang of it, you will not want to stop.
Which One Wins?
Dog sledding and snowmobiling could not be more different, yet both gave me an entirely new perspective on Canada’s winter wonderland. One was all about serenity and connection with nature, the other was an adrenaline fuelled rush through the snow.
If you find yourself in Canada this winter, do yourself a favour, step off the ski slopes for a day and try something new. Whether you go with dog power or horsepower, you will not regret it.
