Not every day of a Fernie trip needs to start and end on the lifts. Between ski days there’s plenty to fill the time.
Get Out and Move
Nordic skiing here suits everyone. The Fernie Golf Course has gentle, easy trails perfect for a first go, while the Elk Valley Nordic Centre adds more challenge if you want a proper workout. Both are Nordic-only, so the grooming stays pristine and you won’t be dodging snowshoers or dog walkers. Gear rentals are easy to sort locally, and once you’re done, Bayleaf Indian Fusion at the golf course is a great spot to warm up with Indian, Nepalese and Western dishes.
Fat biking is one of Fernie’s standout winter activities. The same skills as summer riding, just on tyres twice the width, rolling on top of the snow. If you’re new to it, start on the flat riverside community trails through town. Montane’s multi-use trails are groomed and scenic, with a warming hut partway along the Easy Beaver route overlooking the resort. More confident riders can head to Ridgemont for singletrack — the Kiddyup–Queen V–Deadfall–Sidewinder loop is a good introduction. Or, try the climb up Phat Bastard to Red Sonja in Mt. Fernie Provincial Park if you want your lungs burning.
Snowshoeing is an easy, low-effort way to get outside, and the walk to Fairy Creek Falls is the one to do — a gentle 2km trail from the Visitor Information Centre, just as beautiful frozen as it is in summer. You usually won’t even need snowshoes unless there’s been a big dump, though hiking poles are handy year-round. One thing worth knowing: stay well back from the falls themselves, as the base sits in an avalanche deposit zone below Mt Proctor.
Slower-Paced Fun
Tobogganing is a good one for an afternoon with the family. The hill behind the Dirt Jump Park, right by the Aquatic Centre, is the local favourite. And when you’ve had enough of the cold, the Aquatic Centre itself has a hot tub, steam room, two water slides, and a wading pool, which tends to go down well with kids and adults alike after a big day outside.
In Town
Fernie’s historic downtown is worth a wander in its own right. The Fernie Museum packs 130 years of mining and mountain history, plus 10,000 years of Ktunaxa heritage, into hands-on exhibits, including a mining tunnel that’ll keep kids entertained while you read the plaques. Catch a weekend matinee at the Vogue Theatre or duck into Beanpod to watch chocolate being made from scratch, bean to bar.
Time It Right
March brings Griz Days, Fernie’s biggest winter celebration and a genuinely good reason to plan a trip around. Outside of that, keep an eye on the local events calendar generally. Between live entertainment at the Griz Bar and Rusty Edge, and smaller pop-up events around town, there’s usually something on.
A Fernie ski trip doesn’t have to be all-in on the mountain every single day. Between the Nordic trails, the fat biking, a skating rink, and a downtown with genuine character, there’s enough here to build a full trip here.
