This Insider Guide is written by Rhi – our Systems Lead, who recently explored Japan for the first time.
When I was in primary school, I did a project on Japan—and from that moment, it became the place I dreamed of visiting. 30 years later, I finally made it! But…nothing could have prepared me for the unexpected and delightful culture shocks. These are my Japan highlights…
The Practical
I am always in awe of how considerate and respectful the Japanese people are. Our flight was the most peaceful and organised I’ve ever experienced – and that same sense of discipline continued the ground. The Japanese are incredibly respectful towards authority—who drive Suzuki Swifts, no less. The sereneness of the chaos, from the trains to the quiet precision of crossing the street is amazing. It’s important to mirror that respect as a visitor.
Tokyo’s subway is legendary, and now I know why. It’s a full-blown labyrinth. No matter how lost I got, there was no sign of the Goblin King. Thankfully, the trains arrive so frequently there’s no need to fret, it will only confuse you more. Just keep moving forward, and the right platform will eventually appear.
Pro Tip: If you have a iPhone, download the Welcome Suica Mobile app, then simply top up and use your phone to tag onto any bus/train displaying the IC logo.
One thing that caught me off guard? The food. I went in expecting sushi and donburi dishes, but it turns out ramen and meat-centric dishes dominate the scene. Don’t get me wrong, these dishes were delicious—but they challenged my assumptions of what Japan was all about food-wise. One thing’s for sure: Japan is a nation that takes their noodles seriously.

The Exciting
If you ever find yourself at a loss in Tokyo, do the Mario Street Karts. No, really. Suit up (costume optional but recommended) and zip through the city in a go-kart. It’s chaotic, thrilling, and ridiculously fun. The adrenaline and laughter I had while driving through the streets was worth every second of my first Tokyo adventure.
…And do not forget to check out the slopes — because, let’s face it, Japan is home to some of the world’s best ski resorts. I’ll be honest, I’m a skiing newbie, but trust me, you cannot skip the snow. I took a few beginner lessons in Niseko, and I’m here to say — it’s the best place to make a fool of yourself in style. The instructors were so patient and encouraging that even my wobbly legs started to feel like they knew what they were doing (sort of).

The Surprising
One of the things I adore about Japan’s accommodation. They’re all about the little luxuries. No need to haul a suitcase full of toiletries — most places will hand you everything you need. Shampoo, conditioner, razors… even toothbrushes! And those soft pyjamas they leave for you? Total game changer. It’s like they’ve thought of everything, so you can just slip into comfort.
And then there were the toilets. If you know, you know. Giant high-tech seats in teeny tiny rooms, loaded with buttons I was both curious and terrified to press. My favourite feature? The Otohime—a sweet little function that plays the sound of running water when you sit down. Helps you get started and masks the sound. Genius.
I was also intrigued by Gashapon—the capsule toy vending machines. These little treasures are scattered across Tokyo, and they’re a bigger deal than I ever imagined. I thought they were for kids, but no, adults are just as obsessed (if not more). The excitement of seeing what your capsule holds is honestly a tiny thrill.
Pro Tip: The collectors’ magnets they turn into are an unexpected – yet simple souvenir for the grown-ups.
