Today’s Insider Guide is written by Laura Henderson – Ski Travel Expert, who recently explored Sun Peaks, British Columbia and is sharing her firsthand experience with us.
Stepping into Sun Peaks Resort for the first time in December 2024 was an unforgettable experience. As Canada’s second-largest ski area, boasting 4,270 acres of skiable terrain, I knew I was in for a treat the moment I clicked into my skis.
The resort is spread across three mountains—Tod, Sundance, and Morrisey; each offering a fantastic selection of impeccably groomed trails. I started my trip with some warm-up runs on Sundance, where the wide, immaculately groomed trails were perfect for carving. The long, rolling cruisers made it easy to build confidence and pick up speed while enjoying the stunning alpine scenery.
Mt. Morrisey was a pleasant surprise, offering quieter, beautifully maintained trails with flowing turns and excellent fall-line skiing. The meticulously groomed blue and black runs made for a smooth yet exhilarating ride, with just the right balance of challenge and control.
The highlight, though, had to be the terrain on Tod Mountain. This peak delivered everything from fast, top-to-bottom groomers to long, winding cruisers that seemed to go on forever. The signature 5 Mile run quickly became a favourite, offering a scenic and steady descent perfect for refining technique while soaking in the breathtaking mountain views.
Beyond the slopes, Sun Peaks impressed me with its efficiency. With 13 lifts, including high-speed options, I barely spent any time waiting in line. And with more than ample snowfall in December, the conditions were fantastic.
After long days on the mountain, the village provided the perfect après-ski atmosphere, followed by evenings filled with hearty meals, celebratory drinks, and activities. Having drinks in Bottoms, tasting a Root Beer in the Cahilty Creek Kitchen & Taproom with a bowl of poutine, and fine dining in Mantles with my workmate Kevin, who’s starting to talk like a Canadian, I soon realised Canada will be in my heart forever.
Kevin and I had a good laugh having a beer and throwing axes at Cleavage Axe. It made for a really fun experience. We were very lucky to do the dog sledding, speaking to the owners, who are local. Their passion, care, and knowledge made the experience first-class. You meet all the dogs, get to know their personalities and habits (they all love a good scratch).
I was really impressed with the Ski Hosts – volunteer locals who will show you around the mountain. I just think that shows the huge heart of the mountain and people. Welcoming and generous, their love for the resort truly makes you want to go back year after year.
By the end of my trip, I understood why Sun Peaks has such a loyal following. The combination of world-class groomed terrain, seamless access, and a welcoming vibe made it a December to remember. What is cool about the terrain in Sun Peaks is that it all funnels back to the village—no matter where you go, you’ll funnel back down. I think that’s a nice thing to know when you’ve got kids out there on the mountain.
I’ll definitely be back for more.
