Deep Tracks sits just 250 metres from Hirafu’s King Gondola — about as close as you can get without paying ski-in, ski-out prices. This one-bedroom condo is built for people who’d rather be on the mountain than commuting to it, and it consistently gets good feedback for its location.

At 44 square metres, it’s compact but well-planned: one bedroom with two single beds, sleeping up to three, plus a full kitchen, dishwasher and Wi-Fi for nights you can’t be bothered queuing for a table. A balcony looks out over the neighbourhood, and there’s communal laundry and drying rooms on site — genuinely handy after a day in wet snow.

It’s an easy walk to Hirafu Village, about 900 metres, for restaurants, bars and grocery runs, though most guests won’t bother leaving the immediate area with rental shops, ski schools and cafes all close by.

This unit suits couples or two mates who want their own space without the price tag of a bigger condo. No frills, no fuss — just a solid, well-located base with Netflix and a smart TV for the odd rest day.

Yes, Niseko works fine without a car — the shuttle network linking Hirafu, Higashiyama and Annupuri is reliable and free. But hiring one opens up a lot more.

Rusutsu and Kiroro are both within reach for a day trip, so is Sapporo, and you can chase the best snow across the wider Niseko United area whenever you like, rather than sticking to one village.

It also means easy access to the food and onsen scene beyond the main strip. Some of the best local restaurants and quietest hot springs sit just outside walking distance, and having a car makes them simple to reach whenever you feel like it.

Worth knowing: winter driving here means snow tyres, an International Driving Permit, and genuine caution on icy roads. But for anyone wanting real flexibility and freedom to explore beyond the village, a car rental is absolutely worth it.
