SS Coolidge

The SS Coolidge has a few claims to fame. It is not only regarded as the best wreck dive in Vanuatu, it is also one of the world’s most accessible and almost fully intact wrecks. Located close to shore, the site is accessed both by shore or boat and is one of the largest. You could get a lot of dives out of this site – in fact about 50 of them!

A bit of history:
The SS Coolidge was a luxury passenger liner and it was converted to a troop carrier in WWII. Unfortunately it accidentally struck allied land mines and sunk while entering Santo Harbour in 1942.

The facts:
The wreck: Approx 200 metres long and sits on its side, while the deck plates are vertical
Bow: 20m
Stern: 70m
Water temperature: approx 26ºC

Technical divers can access more of this wreck as a number of its sites lie below the 30-40m depth.

Cargo holds | Depth 33m
Impressive due to its vertical descent into the enormous cargo hold, this dive site is home to the barrel of  a long tom cannon, jeeps, four 155mm Howitzers and much more.

The Lady | Depth: 40m
In its heyday, The Lady was found in the first class smoking room but today you’ll find it in the first class dining room. It is possibly one of the most photographed scenes from the Coolidge… see the photos in our gallery.

The Engine Room | Depth 45m
You can enter this section via a large salvage cut. This part of the wreck you’ll see one of the huge propulsion motors, gauges, control leaves and brass telegraphs.

The Stern | Depth 60-70m
Head past the swimming pool (55m) and more cargo holds to get to this part of the wreck. On your way you’ll also pass a 5″ gun mounted on the stern and view the brass 30cm lettering of the ship’s name. Once on the keel side, which resembles a huge wall dive, you’ll mix with some marine species not found anywhere else on the wreck.
