Travel Alert: Information for travellers

In January 2020, Chinese authorities confirmed the presence of a new type of coronavirus which affects the respiratory system, known as COVID-19 (coronavirus). Many countries are frequently updating border restrictions as the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation develops. It is recommended to read the information regarding this situation available via the following websites:

The New Zealand Government has travel restrictions in place for some foreign travellers, as part of its response to managing the COVID-19 outbreak. This decision will be reviewed every 48 hours and for more information visit the Immigration New Zealand website.

Full travel advice is also available on the websites of World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Flexibility to change on new international bookings flying Air New Zealand.

For any existing long haul bookings (including Honolulu and Bali) issued prior to and including 04 March 2020, with travel commencing prior to 01 July 2020, the following flexibility options are available:

  • You are able to make one change to your booking, where the standard change fee will be waived
  • If you are unsure as to when you would like to travel, you can have your fare held in credit for 12 months from the date of original issue. Upon rebooking, any change fees will be waived.
  • Please be aware that any fare and tax differences will be applicable at the time of rebooking.

For any new international flights booked between 05 – 31 March 2020, should you need to make a change, the standard change fee will be waived. Please note that fare and tax difference may apply when rebooking.

For domestic bookings, we recommend considering flexidate or flexitime fares if you are concerned about needing to change your travel plans, as these fares allow for greater change flexibility.

Flexibility to change on new international bookings flying Emirates.
Any booking made on or before 31 March 2020 now comes with the option to adjust your travel dates at zero charges. If there is a difference in airfare or applicable taxes, due to the reissue/reroute of the ticket, an additional amount will be collected. Emirates Skywards Silver, Gold or Platinum members can take advantage of the added flexibility of retaining membership status with 80% of the tier travel requirements, in addition to 20% more Tier Miles on trips until 30 June.

Travel insurance.
If you have been directly affected by coronavirus, there may be provision for you to claim for benefits provided by your travel insurance policy. Claims will be assessed in accordance with your Policy Wording and may vary depending on the type of policy you purchased. Please contact your active travel agent if you have any concerns pre- or post-travel. Update: Cover-More have announced the suspension of their Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) add-on product in Australia and New Zealand in the wake of the rapidly changing and escalating global impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Free cancellation at select ski resorts
If you wish to book a ski holiday for next season, a number of popular ski resorts have introduced free cancellation  for new bookings until the 30 June 2020.
